In the PPT below, there is a range of ideas on how to use poetry that I presented to the SLN during our first session. By just following a simple structure, pupils are able to use language creatively and with great imagination. I am always amazed by how successfully students can express their thoughts, ideas and feelings using this medium.

Download Dejeuner du matin - poeme - I developped this with a top set year nine group as a way of showing them how the perfect tense could be used in different contexts. I set out a table and used props when first reading the poem to them. They then asked if they could act out the poem, so different individuals took it in turn to read out the poem aloud, whilst a boy and a girl acted it out. The most dramatic performance came when the part of the lady was asked to be taken by a boy and that of the man by a girl! After having discussed various features of the poem, I then showed them versions that other students had written using the perfect tense, the use of repetition, and the twist at the end. They then used this format as a framework for creating their own poems. I had to keep reminding them about not trying to translate complex sentences from English into French and to follow the format. Once they had understood this fully they were able to produce some very interesting, imaginitive and successful work.
Download Le generateur de mots d'amour - This is a PPT which shows you how pupils can write their own poetry using the "generateur" website.
